About this place
China's largest abandoned theme park — a half-built fantasy castle complex outside Beijing that was halted mid-construction in 1998 due to land disputes and has sat frozen in time ever since.
Historical Background
Construction began in 1994 on what was to be Asia's largest amusement park, modeled after Disneyland. Disputes between the developers and local farmers over land compensation halted construction in 1998. The partially built castle structures, concrete frameworks, and empty moats were abandoned mid-construction. For years, local farmers cultivated corn in the shadow of the unfinished fairy-tale towers. The site was demolished in 2013.
