The iconic ferris wheel that never opened — scheduled to launch on May 1, 1986, five days after the Chernobyl disaster forced the evacuation of the entire city of 50,000.
Historical Background
Pripyat was a model Soviet city built in 1970 to house workers of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The amusement park was scheduled to open for May Day celebrations in 1986. On April 26, reactor No. 4 exploded. The park opened briefly on April 27 to entertain children while their parents were told the evacuation was temporary. No one ever returned. The ferris wheel has stood motionless for 40 years, its yellow paint fading into rust.
