A former diamond-mining town in the Namib Desert where sand dunes have swallowed entire rooms, turning once-opulent ballrooms into surreal landscapes of decay and beauty.
Historical Background
Founded in 1908 after a railroad worker found diamonds in the sand, Kolmanskop quickly became one of the wealthiest places in Africa. German settlers built a hospital, ballroom, casino, and bowling alley in the middle of the desert. When richer diamond deposits were found further south in the 1920s, the town was gradually abandoned. By 1956 it was completely empty. The desert began its relentless reclamation immediately.
